I'm told quite often by a coworker and friend that I "use weird words". Last night we were texting and I used the word "malarkey" and she again said "you use the weirdest words!" and so today's post was born! I made a short list of words I use occasionally or want to use more often and then asked my parents and a few other friends for some input.
For the record, I don't think I "use weird words". I do think that because I read a lot and even because I watch TV and movies a lot and because my parents are the same way, I have an expanded vocabulary. My mom especially uses words that in high school I would pretend I knew and then look up later, which means now I know those words. My mom reads a lot too. I come by it naturally.
Here are 15 words that you need to be using more often.
And I'll leave you with one of my favorites clips from my favorite movie.
Lol - so happy you included lollygaggers!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a real humdinger of a post. I'm glad it didn't discombobulate me, I hope I meet a cockalorum soon so I can use that word. (Google is being very persnickety, telling me cockalorum isn't a word, with it's superfluous red line.) I hope you don't think I'm a scallywag, or that this comment is innocuously long. I'm running into a real debacle trying to use the rest of these words, so I guess I'll skedaddle to gallivant around bloglandia, because this is turning into pure malarkey, some might say it's balderdash.
ReplyDeleteThat actually took me a lot longer to use all of those than I'm willing to admit.
This the best comment on this post!
DeleteHa! Yesterday I was in a meeting with my director and he used the terms "loosey goosey" and "wet my whistle" in the same hour. This post reminded me of that- you two would get along!
ReplyDeleteCan you send me flashcards of these? They are fantastic! I use gallivant quite frequently, but hell I need to work the rest into my vocab
ReplyDeleteI use most of these on a somewhat daily basis too, and then people look at me all weird and in my head I'm like DON'T YOU READ? What do your parents teach you for heaven's sake? Lol.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me so happy! :)
ReplyDeleteI think some of these are "southern" and I love it :)
ReplyDeleteI regularly use gallivant, lollygag, and finagle! There is one word on here that I've never heard - cockalorum. But I have the perfect way to put it to use right away, hahah
Malarkey is one of my favorite words ever! I do not use it nearly enough
ReplyDeleteSoooo I use most of these on a daily basis. What does that say about me??
ReplyDeleteI agree about the reading thing though, I read a lot and always have; I credit my annoying vocabulary with that too haha
I LOVE THIS LIST!! I use a lot of these words regularly too. I'm so glad you put a bunch of them together like this!
ReplyDeleteOMG Snicklefritz! I use many of these words in my daily life as well. Reading really does help expand one's vocabulary immensely.
ReplyDeleteSome times I hear or say a work that I haven't heard in forever and I am like AHHHH word of the day!!! Then you give me 15 more that I need to use immediately!
ReplyDeleteI love Malarkey.
Oh why yes my friend. Yes. I might add discombobulated.
ReplyDeleteI love these words! Discombobulate is one of my favorites! I wanted to tell my bloggy friends who are in school about a new website called Gradsaver. Basically the site will pay you to do tasks online such as blogging, FB, twitter, and writing articles. The money is applied directly to your student loan accounts! How cool is this?!? I'm going to try it out. Here is the link if you are interested. I am not working for or affiliated with them..just wanted to share. Sharing does provide points for both of us if you sign up (full disclosure) :) You also get $2.00 for just signing up. Every little bit counts...amiright? :) Have a great weekend! http://t.co/7TJO5LB6R5
ReplyDeleteOh how I love all of these! I used a few of them on the daily, lol!
ReplyDeleteI use quite a few of these. I think that when you read a lot and especially a wide variety, you pick up more words and it makes you want to use them more.
ReplyDeletethese words are so unappreciated.
ReplyDeletebut i can't hear malarkey without thinking "Peeta Mellark"
This was fantastic. Love all of these!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely incorporating these into my vocabulary. hilarious!
