I'm actually not quite as sad as I thought I'd be or as sad as I was last year. There are probably a hundred reasons for that, but I think one is that I still have so many exciting things and trips this summer to look forward to. St. Louis for a Cardinals game on July 5th, then Vegas July 10th-14th, then who knows! I might throw another fun getaway in there. Never can tell.
This post isn't going to be a vacation recap or anything of the sort. I don't have the energy to do that and honestly, it would make for a boring post. We didn't do anything particularly spectacular, but we did do a lot of beach time, a lot of soccer watching, and a lot of nothing. My oh my, have I grown to love the concept of "doing nothing".
Glorious.

Instead, we're gonna chat about something I started while on vacation.
I mentioned, oh back in April-ish? So long ago that I don't remember the post I mentioned it in, BUT I did mentioned in the Spring that I had big, big plans to re-read the Harry Potter series this summer.
It had been almost 10 years since I'd read the first 3 books and probably 6 or 7 years since I'd read the last 4. Too long. I had relied far too heavily on the movies to take me back to Hogwarts through the years. Wonderful movies that I love and cherish and watch so, so, so often, BUT as (hopefully) anyone will tell you - The books are better.
It seemed after I mentioned I was going to re-read the books that many, many of you commented and said you too would love to read them again. I've noticed recently several of you have stuck with that declaration and started reading them along with me. Which made me happier than a house elf receiving a dirty sock!
I just finished The Chamber of Secrets and I've been posting Instagram photos of myself reading the books again. I'm using the hashtag #HPsummerReRead on the Instagrams.
Now, I'd like anyone who is reading them or who has just been convinced to read them again to use that hashtag so I can find you and we can gush over Harry together! Because I for one had almost forgotten how wonderful and fabulous this series actually was. Spoiler Alert: It's wonderful and fabulous. Always.
I've never read the books... and I've only seen one or two of the movies. But you make it sound so enticing I might have to look into this.
ReplyDeleteHarry Potter. Always.
ReplyDeleteoh man I want to be at the beach reading so so so bad!
ReplyDeleteSo...I just started rereading the Hunger Games, but now I'm thinking it's time for my annual reread of HP too!
ReplyDeleteI somehow had missed that you were re-reading them but a non-blogging friend had actually suggested to me that we re-read them this summer too! I just finished The Philosopher's Stone and I was amazed at how well written the books are and how little of their charm they've lost over the last 12+ years. I mean really I think they've gotten better every time I read them!
ReplyDeleteSitting at the beach reading Harry Potter - perfection! I love it! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a wonderful vacation. I actually started to reread the HP books not that long ago. I stopped after book three though. I still have plans to finish the rest because I haven't read books 5-7 more than once.
ReplyDeleteconfession: i never finished reading the books.....
ReplyDeleteOh, what a wonderful idea. HP is my favorite ever, but it's been quite a while since I cracked open the books. Perhaps I'll re-read the series and then take a trip to mecca - The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - as a reward?
ReplyDeleteI had big plans for a Summer re-read and then I ended up re-reading the entire series within one week. I forgot how amazing they are and could not put them down!
ReplyDeleteI've been contemplating doing this very thing all summer. I started re-reading the first book while I was pregnant last year but after my daughter was born I was WAY too overwhelmed/distracted/tired to do much of anything. Now that things have settled down again though I think this would be the perfect time to pick them back up! Maybe I'll even read a chapter or two to her to get her started ;) You're never too young for Harry Potter!! Thank you for reminding me to put this on my summer to do list!!
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower of your blog by the way and will certainly be checking back for new content!
xx Olivia
I tried to read my daughter the Tales of Beedle the Bard but she was sorta kinda confused why there was no real pictures. So. I thought she could handle the first movie. She especially loves Hedwig. And I can't WAIT till I can read these with her. In the meantime I'll read them with me.
ReplyDeleteI reread them EVERY summer and it is the best part of my summer and youre crazy if you think they're too long ... there's no such thing of a harry potter book that is too long, in my ideal world, magic would make the books never end!! so happppyyy that you are rereading, there is SO MUCH the movies leave out!!
ReplyDeleteHubs and I started reading the first one again yesterday (I had to finish The Fault in Our Stars first!). He's never read them, so this will be super fun to read along with him and watch him experience the HP world in a whole new way.
ReplyDeleteYOU'RE GOING TO VEGAS? I hate you.
ReplyDeletejk.
I've never read the series -gasp! I know.. but who knows, maybe I'll get around to them :)
ReplyDeleteTotally doing this. It just gives me another reason to re-read the series!
